Brief history of This Is Holland

This Is Holland opened in 2017 in Amsterdam’s Overhoeks district as an immersive flight simulator attraction. It was developed as the first panoramic flying theatre in the Benelux region, designed to give visitors the sensation of flying over the Netherlands. The attraction uses a giant domed screen to display aerial footage of Dutch landscapes, including cities, canals, tulip fields, windmills, and coastlines. Since March 2022, This Is Holland has been managed by Merlin Entertainments, the company behind other major visitor attractions in the Netherlands.

Who built This Is Holland?

This Is Holland was created through a collaboration of creative and technical teams led by creative director Dennis Bots, who oversaw the selection and direction of the aerial film footage used in the experience. The original music for the film was composed by René Merkelbach and performed by a symphonic orchestra. The flying theatre itself uses a Brogent i‑Ride platform, the motion system that suspends visitors in front of the giant domed screen.

The overall design, concept development, technical integration, and visitor flow were handled by Leisure Expert Group, a team experienced in creating immersive attractions. The project also involved collaboration with partner companies such as Brogent Technologies for the flying theatre mechanics, and the production took place with special permissions to film from helicopters across the Netherlands.

Architecture of This Is Holland

The attraction is housed in a modern cylindrical building in Amsterdam’s Overhoeks district, near the IJ river. The structure was specifically designed to accommodate the Brogent i-Ride flying theatre system and a large domed screen. Its circular layout allows visitors to be fully surrounded visually and physically during the 9-minute flight. The interior also integrates sensory effects such as wind, mist, and sound in sync with the aerial footage, making the architecture an essential part of the immersive storytelling experience.
