It's very easy and safe to book tickets with Headout. The Moco Museum we visited with friends was really beautiful and a lot of fun. There are rooms that immerse you in another dimension. A fantastic optical illusion. A wonderful experience that I recommend you try. Go as soon as possible, don't hesitate!

The house is stunning, and the urban art really resonated with me. Seeing works by Banksy and KAWS was incredible, and the immersive Studio Irma installation made the experience truly magical.

The building looks amazing. Very easily accessible and the staff is very friendly and helpful. A lot of artwork to see an everything is divided into logical sections according to different periods and origins of art.

I didn’t really know what to expect from the Heineken Experience, but it completely exceeded my expectations. It was fun, interactive, and surprisingly engaging — I would definitely visit again. The Moco Museum was also great, especially the digital art rooms. I loved the colors and the overall atmosphere, although it did feel a bit crowded at times with too many people in the same rooms. Overall, a really enjoyable experience and a great combo to do in Amsterdam.

I've bought the one day use (24h) ticket for the public transportation in Amsterdam and was really worth it! It works in the whole city, you will receive a QR code, put it in your wallet and just enjoy the city!!!

There were four of us there (2 couples) and we were all very impressed! The check-in was friendly and uncomplicated. Our guide spoke good English, was very relaxed and told us lots of really interesting things about Amsterdam. There were blankets for everyone against the cold, so there was nothing to complain about. Experiencing Amsterdam from the water is a completely different experience! We would come again!

Amsterdam is one of the most connected cities in the world. The Amsterdam public transportation network is famous for its efficiency, sustainability, and ease of use. Whether you are gliding through water on a ferry or riding a historic tram, getting around is part of the adventure. For travellers, understanding Amsterdam’s public transit is the key to a stress-free vacation. This guide covers everything you need to know to navigate the city like a local.

Airport connectivity in Amsterdam

NS Train

The train is the most efficient way to reach the heart of the city. The station is located directly underneath Schiphol Plaza—just follow the 'Trains' signs from the arrivals hall.

  • Cost: Approximately €4.90 (plus a €1.00 surcharge for disposable paper tickets).
  • Travel time: 14–17 minutes to Amsterdam Central Station.
  • Frequency: Every 10–15 minutes, running 24/7 (with reduced frequency at night).
  • Good for: Travelers staying near Central Station, Dam Square, or the Jordaan.
  • Note: GVB tickets are not valid on the train. You must use a separate NS ticket or tap your contactless card (OVpay).

Bus 369

If you have already purchased a GVB Pass, Bus 369 is your 'secret' hack to avoid paying extra for an airport transfer.

  • Cost: Included in your GVB ticket (or €3.40 for a single 1-hour ticket).
  • Travel time: Approximately 35–40 minutes to Station Sloterdijk.
  • Frequency: Every 15 minutes.
  • Route: It travels from Schiphol Airport/Plaza to Station Sloterdijk in West Amsterdam. From Sloterdijk, you can use your pass to hop on a tram or metro to the city centre.
  • Good for: Budget travellers who want to maximise their gvb pass value immediately upon landing.

Bus 397 (Amsterdam Airport Express)

This direct, red-branded bus is operated by Connexxion (R-net) and provides a specialised service for tourists staying in the southern part of the city.

  • Cost: €6.50 for a single ticket or €11.75 for a return.
  • Travel time: 25–30 minutes to Museumplein or Leidseplein.
  • Frequency: Every 10 minutes during the day.
  • Good for: Travelers staying near the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, or the Vondelpark area.
  • Note: GVB tickets are not valid here. At night, this route is covered by the N97 Niteliner.

Tips for using public transport in Amsterdam

  • Tap-to-pay: You can use your credit card (OVpay) for single trips if you don't have a pass.
  • Boarding: Always enter the tram at the front (driver) or double-doors (conductor).
  • Accessibility: Most stations have elevators; look for the wheelchair symbol on tram doors for low-floor entry.
  • Keep a 15-minute buffer: While Amsterdam public transportation is highly punctual, the city’s narrow bridges and busy intersections can cause minor tram delays. If you have a timed entry for the Anne Frank House or a canal cruise, always plan to arrive at your stop 15 minutes early.
  • Identify official taxis: To avoid common taxi scams, only enter vehicles with blue license plates and a roof light displaying the name of an official company (like TCA). Licensed drivers are legally required to use a meter and display a tariff card both inside and outside the vehicle.
  • Use Bus 369 for the ultimate airport hack: Instead of paying for an expensive train or taxi, use your GVB Pass on GVB Bus 369. It connects Schiphol Airport to Sloterdijk Station, where you can easily transfer to the tram or metro network at no extra cost.
  • Note the rush hour peaks: Amsterdam’s rush hours run from 7am–9am and 4pm–6:30pm on weekdays. During these times, Amsterdam public transit is incredibly crowded, and you are strictly prohibited from taking non-folding bicycles on the metro or tram 26.
  • Luggage etiquette on trams: Most trams have a dedicated space in the middle near the conductor's booth for larger items. However, if the vehicle is packed, drivers may refuse passengers with oversized suitcases for safety reasons. If you have heavy luggage, the metro in Amsterdam is a much more spacious alternative.
  • Walk the 'Last Mile': Many parts of the historic canal belt are best seen on foot. Trams can only go where the tracks are, so expect to walk 5–10 minutes from the nearest stop to reach hidden gems like the 9 Streets (De Negen Straatjes).
  • Choose the route with fewer transfers: If your journey planner offers two options—one with a 10-minute walk and one with two transfers—choose the walk. It is often faster and less stressful than waiting at multiple stops for Amsterdam public transit connections.
