XtraCold Icebar Amsterdam highlights

Warm front lounge

Before you face the cold, start your icy adventure in the cozy lounge bar. It feels like a regular pub with decor and expedition artifacts scattered around. Gear up in thermals, redeem your drinks, and ease into the experience before things get icy.

Arctic ice chamber

Step into the Icebar, chilled to −10°. Watch the walls, benches, and bar counter glow in white and blue as everything around you is carved from crystal clear ice. The sudden blast of cold air makes it feel like you have been transported straight to the North Pole.

Ice sculptures and themed decor

Look around and take in the detailed ice carvings inspired by the Dutch explorer theme. Spot the giant polar bear and the ship’s wheel glowing under blue and pastel lights. The entire setup is incredibly photogenic, so take your time snapping a few shots.

Historical explorer theme

The Arctic vibe is more than just decoration. The entire bar is based on Barentsz’s 1596 expedition. Enjoy immersive acts of storytelling where the staff play as ship officers while signs inside explain how his crew survived the icy journey.

Expertly crafted cocktails

And that is not it. You also have a full drink menu to explore! Choose from cocktails, beer, vodka, orange juice, and flavored shots. Every drink feels extra refreshing in the icy setting, especially when you are sipping from a glass made of ice.

Fascinating lights

If you love cool visuals, the lighting alone is worth the visit. Coloured lights bounce off the ice and give the chamber a glow that makes the space feel almost otherworldly. The Icebar theme changes twice a year, so the atmosphere feels new every time you visit.

Visitor tips

  • Book 2 weeks ahead of time, especially during peak tourist season in summer.
  • Arrive at least 20 minutes before your slot to grab your first drink in the lounge and get your thermal jacket and gloves.
  • Dress for the cold. Even with the provided coat and gloves, wear closed shoes, warm socks, and layered clothes.
  • Cold temperatures can drain your phone’s battery faster, so keep your device in an inner pocket when not shooting.
  • Use your first token in the warm lounge. Mixed cocktails are only served there. Inside the Icebar you can get beer, shots, or juice in ice glasses.
  • Plan for a short stay inside the Icebar. The ice chamber is about minus 10 degrees Celsius and most visitors spend 20 to 30 minutes inside before heading back to the lounge.
  • Do not touch the ice sculptures or walls with bare hands, as it can damage the ice.
  • Avoid bringing big bags or bulky items. The bar has no lockers, so a small backpack or purse is better to keep your belongings with you.
