Best time to visit the Keukenhof

Weekday vs Weekend

#
  • Best days: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays are the quietest days to explore the park.
  • Days to avoid: Saturdays and Sundays are the busiest, particularly during the Keukenhof peak season in mid-April.
  • Best time of day: Arrive at opening (8am) or after 4pm. The ‘Golden Hour’ light in the late afternoon is perfect for photography.
  • Pro-tip: Avoid the Keukenhof timings between 11am and 3pm when tour groups from Amsterdam are at their peak.

Peak season vs low season

#
  • Low season (March 19–early April):
  • Weather: Crisp and unpredictable; early spring air.
  • Crowds: Low to moderate.
  • Blooms: Mostly crocuses, daffodils, and hyacinths. Early tulips begin appearing in indoor pavilions.
  • Peak season (Mid-April–early May):
  • Weather: Mild and sunny, the quintessential Keukenhof season.
  • Crowds: High, especially during the Flower Parade weekend (April 18, 2026).
  • Blooms: This is the best time to visit Keukenhof for the iconic tulip fields. Millions of tulips are in full bloom simultaneously.

What are the best flowering periods in Keukenhof?

While every day of the spring season is beautiful to witness at Keukenhof, the flowers bloom in three different flowering periods, each offering something special.

First flowering period

The garden will have many blooming flowers during the initial opening days. You can also witness some great indoor flower shows with blooming tulips on display. In the gardens outside, you will find daffodils and crocuses in bloom during this period.

Second flowering period

After the flowering period of the crocuses and daffodils passes, the hyacinths and the early tulips take centre stage and are ready to bloom in the outdoor gardens. The indoor flower shows still take place during this period.

Third flowering period

In the third and final flowering period, the eponymous tulips of the Tulip Festival will bloom in their entire glory in the outdoor gardens. The trees will be greener, the sun will be brighter, and the indoor flower shows will still showcase beautiful flowers.

How long should I spend at Keukenhof?

To truly appreciate the 32 hectares of gardens, you should set aside a significant portion of your day.

Recommended duration: 3 to 5 hours

  • Quick visit (2 hours): Focus on the main tulip walk and the Willem-Alexander Pavilion.
  • Leisurely visit (4+ hours): Includes a whisper boat ride, a visit to the windmill, and exploring the themed gardens.
